The Skin Cancer Institute participates in events, including the University of Arizona campus wellness and community health expos, to increase public knowledge of skin cancers and their impact on health. Prevention is our primary goal.
Melanoma Walk 2011 - www.FightMelanomaToday.org
The Skin Cancer Institute at the Arizona Cancer hosted Melanoma Walk 2011 on Saturday, October 1st from 2-6pm at the Arizona Cancer Center at UMC North.
The event included a 1.5 mile walk, free skin cancer screenings, food, and entertainment. Most importantly, the walk highlighted melanoma awareness and raised over $36,000 in funds. That money will stay in Arizona to support melanoma research, community outreach and education, and patient care in our multidisciplinary clinics.

Since 2006, this community sun safety awareness campaign has been held with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and supported by the Bert W. Martin Foundation. As part of this campaign, nearly 600 community members have received free skin cancer screenings and 2,000 people have participated in the annual fair.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has been an invaluable partner with the Skin Cancer Institute and has committed to making sun safety a priority for their staff and visitors. To this end ASDM provides sunscreen dispensers in each bathroom with information about proper application and now provides umbrellas with sun protective fabric provided by SunScape Fashion for guests to use at no cost. We hope to expand our relationship to include permanent sun-related displays and we look forward to forming similar collaborations with other outdoor Tucson venues.

Sun & Saguaros at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix
Members of the Arizona Sun Safety Coalition sponsored the Sun & Saguaro event, which aimed at increasing skin cancer prevention awareness and educating Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden visitors regarding safe sun practices. The event included presentations by Captain Cutaneum, Buddy Bear (Phoenix Recreation Department Aquatics Division) and The Deliverer (Phoenix Fire Department). Various local entities promoted sun safety, including a "Kid's Corner" with craft projects using sun-sensitive beads. Free full-body skin cancer screenings were performed by eight local dermatology specialists who graciously volunteered to perform the examinations.
