The conference - initiated by Ana María López, MD, MPH, associate dean of outreach and multicultural affairs and professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Arizona, Arizona Cancer Center - hosted more than 200 participants.
This year’s conference was a collaboration with the Well Woman HealthCheck Program. This educational event offered bilingual Spanish/English breast health information on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care. The sessions included interactive discussions on What is Breast Cancer?, Breast Cancer Genetics, Lymphedema Therapy and Physical Activity and Breast Cancer. Presenters were Ana Maria Lopez, MD, MPH; Jessica Ray, MS, CGC' Pere’ Summers, OTR/L, CLT; and Robin Memel Fox, MA, ADTR, LPC. A panel of Latina breast cancer survivors shared their experiences, and community health centers provided exhibits with educational materials.
As in previous years, the conference honored a program for its care of Latino breast cancer patients in Southern Arizona. This year’s awardee was the Well Woman HealthCheck Program.
The conference was sponsored by the Southern Arizona Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the cure.
