Lute Olson, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and UA Wildcat basketball coach, is teaming up with the Friends of the University of Arizona Libraries for a dinner and book signing of his new memoir Lute! The Seasons of My Life. Lute’s new autobiography, written with David Fisher and including a foreward by coaching legend John Wooden, is a revealing look into his life on and off of the basketball court. The book recounts Lute’s early career, his 1997 National Championship, and details of his personal life, including his courtship with wife Christine Toretti as well as years spent with his first wife, Bobbi Olson.
Coach Olson’s autobiography is set for release on Oct. 3, 2006. The Friends of the University of Arizona Libraries is celebrating the release on Oct. 24, 2006, at 6:30 p.m. at the Tucson Country Club. This event will include dinner, a video of Lute’s career and a talk by Lute’s wife Christine, followed by a book signing.
Tickets for the event are $150 per person and include dinner, drinks and a signed copy of Lute’s autobiography. All proceeds will go to the Friends of the University of Arizona Libraries, a non-profit organization that supports the UA Libraries with programs, acquisitions, preservation and endowments. If you would like to purchase tickets for this event or for more information, contact Sandy Vasquez at 621-6431 or e-mail vasquezs@u.library.arizona.edu.
Last year, Coach Olson and the entire Olson family made a $1 million gift to establish the Bobbi Olson Endowment for Ovarian Cancer Research. Christine Olson recounts a conversation she and Lute had a couple of years ago when she asked Lute what he wanted his legacy to be, “Hall of Fame…NCAA Champ…Coach?” He said he wanted to make a profound difference in the fight to cure ovarian cancer. Lute and Christine are now co-chairing a new campaign to make the Arizona Cancer Center the definitive center for women’s cancer research and treatment. The Bobbi Fund has been established so that others may honor the legacy of Bobbi Olson by supporting the Division of Women’s Cancers at the Arizona Cancer Center.
