G. Timothy Bowden, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, radiation oncology, pharmacology and toxicology, and molecular and cellular biology, has been appointed director of basic science research for the Arizona Cancer Center .

"I'm looking forward to leading this vital division of the Arizona Cancer Center and to meeting the challenges ahead," said Dr. Bowden. "I plan to focus on building the division in many areas, including carcinogenesis, bioinformatics, molecular immunology, and structural biology."

Dr. Bowden was recruited to the University of Arizona through the Department of Radiation Oncology in 1978. He received his first RO1 grant from the National Cancer Institute in 1985 and has had continuous funding since then. His major interests have focused on chemoprevention and the mechanisms of DNA breakdown and repair.

Another major area focus for Dr. Bowden has been research education and the Cancer Biology Graduate Interdisciplinary Program. In 1988 he began working with the GIDP and has chaired it since 1992. To date, 34 students have completed the program to earn a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in cancer biology. This year, eight students-the largest class so far-are beginning their graduate career. In addition to the Cancer Biology GIDP, Dr. Bowden has personally mentored 20 Ph.D. students in cancer biology, molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology and toxicology and microbiology and immunology. He has also mentored five master's students.

"Dr. Tim Bowden is one of the world's top skin carcinogenesis scientists, as evidenced by his outstanding contribution to an understanding of ultraviolet, light-induced signal transduction pathways leading to non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers," said Arizona Cancer Center Director David S. Alberts, M.D. "Additionally, he has been an outstanding educator and mentor for countless predoctoral and postdoctoral students in cancer biology. His dedication to scientific discovery and teaching in the Arizona Cancer Center for more than 27 years is truly remarkable."
