The Arizona Cancer Center GI SPORE recognizes the need for hypothesis-based translational research as key to development of effective strategies for treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal cancer.  Thus the recruitment and development of investigators with promise is clearly critical.  Two positions are available annually for the career development of new or established investigators that wish to redirect their efforts specifically in the area of translational research into colorectal, esophageal, or pancreatic cancer. The Career Development Committee will select the candidates with approval by the SPORE Executive Committee.

The career development award is to provide support for investigators to develop successful independent research programs in the area of G.I. cancer.  Thus, applicants are required to select an appropriate mentor from the G.I. Cancer program for this purpose. A letter from the intended mentor should accompany the application.

The criteria for selection of individuals for support are:

  1. Potential for independent investigation

  2. Feasibility and quality of the proposed area of research

  3. Translational importance of the proposed research

  4. Experience of the mentor

  5. Interactions with other SPORE investigators

  6. Time commitment to research

The Committee members rate the applicants in each of the six categories as:

  1. Outstanding (1.0 – 1.5)

  2. Excellent (1.6 – 2.0)

  3. Very good (2.1 – 3.0)

  4. Good (3.1-4.0)

  5. Acceptable (4.1 – 5.0)

  6. Not responsive to Program guidelines

Awards are made in the amount of $50,000 salary support and $10,000 operations support with an opportunity of renewal for up to three years. Applications are due by April 1 each year and will be available through this website in February 2004. The Career Development Program encourages the cooperation of departments with the SPORE to plan ahead to protect the research time of the awardee to maximize the benefit to their translational career. Applications must be submitted electronically, no more than five pages in length.  Supplemental material must include NIH biosketch and other support and appropriate University Approval.

The University of Arizona is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer. Minorities, women, Vietnam-era veterans, disabled veterans, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
