Mission
The fundamental mission of the Special Populations Shared Service (SPSS) is to assist Arizona Cancer Center (AZCC) researchers and clinicians to conduct cancer-related research focusing on under-represented populations; Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians, African Americans, Asian American, rural populations, and other non-majority groups. As such, the Service's focus is on facilitating communication within the AZCC and between the AZCC and communities of under-served and minority populations. This mission fits well within the overarching goals of the AZCC and the NCI.
Planned Changes
The SPSS is undergoing re-organization as recommended in September 2006 by the Scientific Advisory Board. The Service will be brought into closer alignment with the overarching goals of the AZCC's cancer disparities corrective efforts directed by Elena Martinez, Ph.D. As Director, Dr. Martinez will guide the service to ensure that it is supporting the AZCC’s overall outreach efforts directed at minority and underserved populations by working with each of the five scientific programs in the Center. These five research programs are:
-
Therapeutic Development
-
Cancer Imaging
-
Cancer Biology and Genetics Program
-
Cancer Prevention & Control
-
Gastrointestinal Cancer
Both Dr. Ana Maria Lopez and Dr. Kathryn Coe will continue to bring their unique expertise in working with underrepresented populations, in research and service projects, to the AZCC and the population that it serves through their work with the Service. Dr. Coe will work predominantly in Phoenix, largely through her efforts in the Community Networks Program with the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona. Dr. Lopez will facilitate access to outreach and translation services in support of the AZCC clinical research efforts. In that regard, the Service will work to incorporate these activities into the Clinical Research Shared Service as a "routine" service offering (e.g., the Clinical Research Shared Service will directly utilize the services of the Special Populations Shared Service).
