The Behavioral Measurement Shared Service (BMSS) has over 20 years experience as a national leader in providing support to researchers investigating human behaviors such as:
- Diet
- Physical Activity
- Anthropometrics Measurement
- Tobacco Exposure
- General Behavioral Risk Factors
- Quality-of-life
- Sun Safety Behaviors
- Sexual Practices
- Health Habits
We can enhance the quality and efficiency of research projects by offering assistance in project development, availability of validated instruments used by numerous research groups around the country, and support for the collection and analysis of behavior and patient-reported outcomes (e.g., symptom experience, satisfaction with care, and health-related quality of life).
A wide range of accurate and reliable QUESTIONNAIRES and research designs for assessing human behavior are provided. Specialized instruments for culturally diversified populations such as Mexican Americans and Native Americans and focused diet questionnaires are also available.
SERVICES for the research community include:
- Validated questionnaires
- Consultation for behavioral research design
- Interviewer training
- Data collection – 24-hour dietary recalls
- Body composition assessment
- Consultation on use of existing health-related quality of life measures
- Statistical summaries and analysis
- Questionnaire development
- Database creation and management
The BMSS provides technical support for the use of these questionnaires, including optical scanning technology (including image archiving and intelligent character recognition), nutrition assessment software, and light pen entry system for developmental instruments.
Assistance with supportive care instruments help researchers and clinicians facilitate the incorporation of quality of life assessment in clinical trials, observational studies, supportive care settings, and in clinical practice by providing technical assistance for the collection of self-reported health status and health-related quality of life data from patients and populations.
The BMSS is available to assist any investigator within the Arizona Cancer Center, the University of Arizona research community, as well as external research entities. Priority is given to Cancer Center investigators. Please review our list of user references; following the references is a list of peer-reviewed publications. All fees are determined by project scope.
The BMSS consists of a CORE RESEARCH TEAM providing expertise in dietary and human behavioral assessment. The BMSS is co-directed by Cynthia Thomson, PhD, RD, and Stephen Coons, PhD RPh and includes a Scientific Advisory Board. The multidisciplinary makeup of this experienced research team allows us to address a broad spectrum of research issues, and to provide consultation regarding the design, validation, and implementation of behavioral assessment in the context of clinical research.
