Introduction
The field of Hematology includes the study of blood forming elements, blood constituents, coagulation, and/or organs involved in or that interact with these physiologic functions. Medical oncology is the study of the principles in the management and treatment of cancer including pathology, laboratory medicine, radiology, surgical and radiation oncology, chemotherapy, biologic therapy and hormonal therapy. Each of the two fields is governed by a professional society. The professional society for hematologists is the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the professional society of medical oncologists is the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Both societies support only training programs accredited by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Both ASCO and ASH have developed curriculum guidelines for accredited training programs. The ABIM offers a certification exam in both Hematology and in Medical Oncology for individuals who have successful completed an accredited training program in Hematology, Medical Oncology or a combined accredited training program in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. An accredited fellowship training program in Hematology is two years in duration. An accredited fellowship training program in Medical Oncology is also two years in duration. A combined accredited fellowship training program in Hematology and Medical Oncology is three years in duration.
