David S. Alberts, M.D. ,
Director of the R25 Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program, is a Regents Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Public Health at the University of Arizona . He was the Director of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the Arizona Cancer Center from 1988 to 2005, when he was appointed Director of the Arizona Cancer Center . In addition, Dr. Alberts is a member of the NCI's Scientific Advisory Board and Chairperson of the Cancer Prevention and Control Committee in the Gynecologic Oncology Group. He has been funded yearly by the NCI since 1976 for laboratory and clinical research related to the clinical pharmacology of cytotoxic and cancer prevention agents, as well as the development of research strategies for the prevention of breast, colon, prostate and skin cancers. Since 1988, he has also been the Principal Investigator of two NCI-funded program projects in the areas of skin and colon cancer prevention. He has published over 395 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, 92 book chapters and 40 invited, full journal publications. Currently, he is Co-Editor-In-Chief for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Preventi on . He has also been involved in the development of twelve U.S. patents. He recently completed serving as the Chairman of the Gynecologic Cancer Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group, having held this position since 1977. He was Associate Dean for Research at the University of Arizona College of Medicine from 1996-2002. Dr. Alberts continues to coordinate phase I and pharmacokinetic drug studies at the Arizona Cancer Center for chemopreventive and anti-cancer agents, as well as phase I and II clinical trials of the new cytoprotective agents. Recently, he was awarded an NCI-DCP contract for phase I and II chemopreventive agent studies (2003 to 2008). Dr. Alberts' laboratory research is concentrated on the in vitro screening of new chemicals for cancer prevention and treatment activity, plus the evaluation of new surrogate endpoint biomarkers for cancer prevention trials.
Iman Hakim, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., co-Director of the R25 Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program, is a Professor of Public Health, Nutrition and Family & Community Medicine at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH), at the University of Arizona . She is the director of the Division of Health Promotion Sciences at MEZCOPH and an active member of the "Cancer Prevention & Control Program" at the Arizona Cancer Center . She is a devoted teacher and she is currently the chair of the "Family & Child Health Concentration at MEZCOPH. For the past 18 years, she has worked with a wide variety of national and international organizations on ways to improve health promotion and disease prevention. She has served as the Principal Investigator of large-scale, behavior change interventions trials focused on nutrition and tobacco. Her intervention research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DOD), the state (ADCRC) and the Ford Foundation. These projects have involved such issues as: Chemoprevention of lung carcinogenesis using green tea (NIH/NCI); a dietary intervention to study the effects of tea consumption on smoking-related oxidative stress (DOD); Development of tea polyphenols database & validation of the tea & citrus questionnaires (NIH/NCI); The role of citrus-cancer association in Mediterranean diet (NIH/NCI); The Role Of High Tea Consumption In The Modulation Of DNA damage (ADCRC); Needs assessment for MCH Block Grant. (Mohave County, Inter- Agency Agreement, AZ); Ethnographic studies on female circumcision in rural Giza, Egypt (National Research Center, Egypt); SocioDemographic characteristics & environmental co rr elates of blood, salivary and breast milk lead levels in early childhood (Ford Foundation, Egypt);A longitudinal study of feeding patterns, health and development of infants and preschool children in a rural village in Giza, Egypt (National Research Center, Egypt). She is the co-principal investigator on the Cancer Prevention Training Grant (NIH/NCI) and an active faculty member on the MCH training grant (HRSA).
M. Elena Martínez, R.D., Ph.D., co-Director of the R25 Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program and Co-Director of the CPC Program at the Arizona Cancer Center is a Professor of Public Health in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Arizona 's Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. She was recently awarded the prestigious American Cancer Society - Richard H. Hollen Cancer Prevention Professorship. She earned a B.S. degree in nutrition from the University of Illinois , Chicago, and she also holds a master of public health and a doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston . After completing her doctoral studies, Dr. Martínez accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center . She also received additional training as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston before her faculty appointment at the University of Arizona Cancer Center in 1996. Dr. Martínez and her research team are currently developing a program focused on increasing colorectal cancer screening rates in the state of Arizona. Their overall goal is to increase the proportion of the Arizona population aged 50 years and older who undergo colorectal cancer screening to 75 percent by 2010. To accomplish this, a team of scientists, community leaders, and organizations from various backgrounds will be assembled to help develop meaningful and important research projects. Dr. Martínez primary field of interest is in gene-environment interactions as they relate to cancer risk. She is a leader in the field of molecular epidemiology, a field which bridges basic science, epidemiology and prevention.
