Ways to Support the Arizona Cancer Center

Your gift to the Arizona Cancer Center will advance the goal of achieving a cancer-free generation. There are a number of ways to provide substantial support for the Center’s progress toward understanding and managing cancer.

Endowment Gifts make it possible to stabilize major research programs and faculty positions in areas where federal agencies do not provide the support or stability needed over an extended time. Endowed funds create a lasting legacy of support and are critical for both key positions and major programs in cancer research. Endowed professorships provide valuable support for the continuing achievements of senior physicians and scientists of the highest distinction. On the other hand, fellowship endowments benefit promising young scientists at the start of their research careers. Endowments allow us to recruit and retain key faculty members who can commit much of their time to cancer research and build important and valuable research programs. Included among our endowment opportunities is support for laboratories and lectureships. Identification of endowments has our highest priority. back to top

Unrestricted Gifts for cancer research are especially valuable, for they provide the flexibility needed to move quickly in unexpected directions in research and to swiftly pursue promising clinical applications. Unrestricted gifts also fund critical services that are not financed by other sources. back to top

Restricted Gifts benefit specific programs of the donor’s choosing. Funds may be designated for any of the Center’s initiatives in patient care, research, and education.

Estate & Trust Gifts are truly flexible ways to support the Center’s work. Donors may leave a percentage of their estate or a fixed dollar amount. Another option is to name the Arizona Cancer Center as a residual beneficiary, leaving the Center what remains after specific bequests to loved ones. These may be unrestricted gifts, to be used where most urgently needed, or they may be designated for a specific purpose, such as the creation of a named endowed chair. The Center’s Development Office is prepared to assist donors with the appropriate language to create such gifts, although we urge that independent legal counsel be sought when preparing any type of will or trust. back to top

Life Income Gifts allow donors to make a gift of cash or appreciated property to the Arizona Cancer Center while retaining all or a portion of the annual income generated by the asset. Versions of these gift plans include Gift Annuities, Pooled-Income Funds, and Charitable Trusts. These gifts may: provide income for life or a term of years to the donor and/or another beneficiary, such as a spouse or other family member; reduce the donor’s tax obligations as a result of a charitable income tax deduction; "unlock" income from highly appreciated but low-yielding property without incurring any capital gains tax; and save estate and gift taxes. These plans can help meet a number of financial goals, including planning for retirement, providing for elderly relatives, and funding educational expenses. The University of Arizona Foundation assists donors with the structuring and legal aspects of planned giving. back to top

Capital Gifts for scientific equipment sustain the Arizona Cancer Center as one of the nation’s leaders in the fight against cancer. Contributions for capital projects provide the Center with the vital resources that high-quality research and treatment require. back to top

Assets for Giving

A gift to the Arizona Cancer Center can contribute to advances in cancer research, as well as provide the donor with tax savings, and in certain cases, a lifetime income. Many types of assets are available; the following list offers a few possibilities.

Gifts of cash are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Gifts of appreciated securities held for more than a year are generally tax deductible at their current value.

Gifts of real estate or tangible personal property also may provide significant tax benefits.

Gifts of life insurance provide a simple way to make a significant gift in the future by naming the Center to receive all or a portion of the proceeds of a policy that is no longer needed for family protection. Others have chosen to contribute paid-up policies during their lifetimes, thus realizing a charitable deduction for the policy’s cash surrender value.

Gifts of pension plans afford another simple way to support the Arizona Cancer Center by making the Center a beneficiary of a pension plan. To make this change, please consult your plan administrator and counsel to discuss the best way to make this type of gift. The gift may pass to the Center without being subject to estate and income taxes.

Special Occasion Giving

Many people realize great satisfaction in making memorial tributes and remembrance gifts to the Arizona Cancer Center. Others make contributions as a way of honoring the Center’s physicians, scientists, or staff. These gifts not only express high regard for loved ones and friends, but also allow the Center to accomplish its goal of achieving a cancer-free generation.

A gift may be designated for any occasion—a birthday, an anniversary, a holiday—or used to express appreciation or love. When the gift is received, a special letter of notification will be sent to the person or family that the donor chooses, and the donor will receive an acknowledgment letter. Such contributions are tax deductible. back to top
